Emotional Safety Education what is that? and what does it have to do with sex ed?” you might say to yourself. Well this blog post I explain to you about Emotional Safety and a snippet of what is involved in a Modern Intimacy workshop.

The best way I like to explain Emotional Safety is that Emotional Safety is needed in ANY relationship. Whether its a friendship, a parent/child relationship or even a teacher/student relationship. There needs to be a feeling of safety, feeling you can be yourself and that you can express yourself. Well just like you need Emotional Safety in these relationships. You need Emotional Safety when being sexual with another.

When teaching a workshop I like to talk about Emotional Safety in Three stages:

Pre Care - Communicating/Checking in before Sexual Encounter

During Care - Communicating/Checking in during a Sexual Encounter

After Care - Communicating/Checking in After Sexual Encounter.

I believe that these stages are crucial to a enjoyable/safe sexual experience. Knowing how to communicate, understanding consent and checking in with the other but also your self is a great way to be able to continue to make sexual decisions that are right for you.

Emotional Safety is feeling comfortable/safe/yourself when with another and in your decisions.

Knowing how to communicate/check in with another and yourself really is what Emotionally Safe Sex is all about.

Including young people in this conversation and guiding them through the importance of Emotional Safety I feel will give them insight into what is right for them when they start exploring themselves sexually.

As I always like to add teaching Physical safety such as STI’s/Condoms on bananas is very important but Emotional Safety really creates the foundation of creating safety between two people!
